On Monday night, the U.S. Coast Guard helped rescue a group of 14 fishermen that were stranded on an ice floe off of Saginaw Bay.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes’ Twitter page, personnel from the Saginaw River air stations along with Traverse City and Detroit air stations responded to the scene along with a Huron County airboat.

Rescued parties were transported to emergency medical services waiting at the Sebewaing Airport by 10:15 p.m.

Just last Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard established a Saginaw Bay regulated navigation area for the winter months, initiating the process to activate a safety zone in Saginaw Bay.

The zone will be activated at 8 a.m. on Saturday and apply during the winter months to protect waterway users from hazards associated with winter conditions and navigation. Any vessels wishing to enter these areas after 8 a.m. on Saturday, are required to contact Sector Detroit at (313) 568-9560 to request permission to enter the zone at least 72 hours in advance.

The U.S. Coast Guard used this incident to remind people that no ice is safe ice and to always make sure to be aware of the every changing weather condition.
