On March 16, 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer added “sexual orientation and identity gender or expression” in Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976 – a historical change for the LGBTQ community in Michigan.
State and Saginaw-Bay City-Midland LGBTQ & Ally leaders listened to Governor Gretchen Whitmer as she updated the civil rights act in Lansing.
These local leaders who longtime wanted LGBTQ legal protection were in Lansing on March 16th:
- Tom Brubaker – PFLAG Tri-Cities, President. The local PFLAG chapter of parents, family and friends of LGBTQ people have been involved in LGBTQ equality for 32 years.
- Scott Ellis – Great Lakes Bay (GLB) Pride, Executive Director. GLB Pride has been involved LGBTQ equality for 20 years. The former name was Perceptions.
- Lee Ann Keller – GLB Pride, President
- Gregg Barrick – GLB Pride, Vice President

- Annie Boensch – Saginaw City Council
- Kevin Rooker – Saginaw Board of Education
- Andrea Norton – LGBTQ+ Veteran Advocate
- Brandon Errer – Michigan Senate Staffer, Deputy Finance Director

So many local and state-wide people have worked on LGBTQ equality. We thank you.
