As the Cesar Chavez holiday approaches on Sunday, March 31, we proudly refer readers to an essay researched and authored by Saginaw’s own John Ayala, community leader and volunteer. See if you agree that this historical document, ideal for a social studies lesson plan in any school, should be archived and preserved. Click here to read.

The holiday for the civil rights hero will mark his 97th birthday, but the final day of March this year also is Easter Sunday, so many events are earlier in the week:

  • 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, “American Homeboy” film documentary at SVSU’s Curtiss Hall, followed by Q&A with the director, Brandon Maxwell.
  • 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, American G.I. Forum Scholarship Luncheon, Horizons Conference Center, 6200 State.
  • Noon Thursday, March 28, Screening of the documentary “Dolores”, Delta College Downtown Saginaw Center, 319 E Genesee Ave.
  • 5 p.m. Friday, March 29, Easter family event at the Mexican American Council, 1537 South Washington.
