“Hello Hoyt!” is the title of an open house at Saginaw’s landmark downtown library, slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 18.

A promo announcement states, “Want to learn all the insider tips and tricks to get the most out of your library card? You’ll get a tour of Hoyt Library and learn about all the resources beyond books that we have to help you in your day-to-day life.”

And if passersby witness someone running out the doors, shouting “Goodbye Hoyt,” the cause may be that they encountered a ghost in the three-story edifice, which is marking its 133rd birthday.

Maria McCarville, Public Libraries of Saginaw Director

Libraries Director Maria McCarville says the most-frequently asked questions on past tours have been about whether or not Hoyt is haunted.

“Personally, I never have seen a ghost flying through here, in a white sheet with long flowing hair,” explains Maria, who nonetheless has selected a first-floor corner office with a speedy exit access into the rear parking lot. “However, other people have seen them.”

Of course, she adds, ghosts also may aim to “get the most” out of their library cards beyond books, such as access to movies and concerts and various forms of entertainment and information.

To attend, please register in advance online or by calling (989) 755-0904.
