Words of wisdom about doing the right thing,” will focus on Quiñones’ odds-defying journey from migrant farm work to broadcast journalism, the power of education, championing the Latino American Dream, and thought-provoking perspectives on human nature and ethical behavior.

The Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw Michigan will host comedian Kevin James as part of the The Irregardless Tour on September 30, 2023.

Kevin James began his career as a stand-up on the Long Island comedy scene. After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom.

The King of Queens, which premiered in 1998, ran for nine seasons on CBS with James starring and executive producing, and it garnered him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The show concluded its run in 2007 but continues to air daily in syndication across the country and around the world. James also starred in, and executive produced The Crew, a sitcom set in the world of NASCAR and is currently developing a single camera comedy (both for Netflix).

James brought his stand-up act to TV with Sweat the Small Stuff, a one-hour special for Comedy Central. Kevin James and Ray Romano executive produced and starred in the HBO Sports Special Making the Cut: The Road to Pebble Beach; a documentary about the Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Tournament that was nominated for a Sports Emmy. “I gained 100 pounds,” jokes Barnes “Boe” Reynolds, of the time he met and married a Buena Vista High School grad named Letia Joe.

On the other hand, Boe knows cooking, too, even though he’s from Saginaw High.

Tia’s Soul

They have teamed to open Tia’s Soul, and they will return to Letia’s alma mater, now home of the BV Farmers Market, for the township’s “Food for the Soul” tasting event from 11 a.m until 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, to bring a close to Black History Month. Admission is $15.

Specifically, the market is located in the ROTC section of the former high school. with access at 3945 Towerline Road. Township leaders have combined a federal grant with volunteer cleanup labor to bring new life to the site, while still seeking developers.

Food for the Soul Tasting event
Baldwin’s Smokehouse BBQ

Baldwin’s Smokehouse Barbeque will join Tia’s Soul as co-caterers. They have brought family-owned to a Holland Avenue corridor once totally dominated by fast-food chains. Wendy’s departed with the loss of Fort Saginaw Mall, and the Reynolds couple obtained a former Burger King.

Boe also knows jokes, because he never came close to 100 pounds over while he was laboring as a machine operator at Nexteer Automotive. Letia, meanwhile, was a cleaning and housekeeping supervisor at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital.

They never dreamed that they one day would become restaurant owners and operators, but when house guests would praise the plates they served, they volunteered to cater some events for family and friends. Next, they tried their hands at the downtown SVRC food court. They met some moderate success, but they discovered that their menu staples like fried catfish and/or BBQ ribs, or chicken and waffles, are not standard takeout fare for someone on a short lunch break.

With spiritual inspiration from New Life Baptist Ministries, they say their efforts are “honoring God” in a foremost way.

Baldwin’s Smokehouse also brings spiritual inspiration to the former Texan Restaurant across the roadway from Tia’s. The owners are Pastor Roy Baldwin and his wife, Evelyn, from New Beginnings Deliverance Ministries. The Baldwins are entering their fourth year in business, while the Reynolds couple are in their second year.

Our supporters have learned they can count on us. The Saginaw African Cultural Festival will always be there at Morley School Park, the second full weekend in August. which means 2023 will be Aug. 11-13.

We even maintained when COVID-19 invaded all of our lives. We would have canceled in 2020, but we went virtual. We carefully came back with one day in 2011, and we returned full-scale with three days last summer.

This year will mark our 55th annual festival. Our research indicates that little old Saginaw is home to the nation’s longest-running annual Black arts event, surpassing even the major cities.

This is a credit to the original founders of a modest downtown event in 1969 that has blossomed into a summer staple for so many patrons. Omowale Art Smith still is with us, although Charles McNair passed away in 2021.

As longtime principal at Morley Elementary, Mr. McNair always made sure that children’s activities were included and that SACF would gain its well-earned status as a family event. The Charles L. McNair Family Foundation maintains this spirit with a major annual donation, joining the Saginaw Art and Enrichment Commission, Delta College, Saginaw Valley State University and Family First Credit Union.

With the expanded funding, we expanded the festival grounds back toward the basketball courts. We now are exploring more changes, with a goal of reducing walk distances and bringing more cohesion among the wide variety of activities and vendors. Anyone with suggestions may contact me at ralmart4@aol.com or (989) 992-9184. Interested volunteers can sign up by filling out our online form.

We also wish to build awareness that we offer cultural activities and awareness beyond the summer spectacular. These include a Kwanzaa celebration, topical films, and an annual 5-K walk and run to share with other worthy causes, including mental health last year.

Yes, it’s still suggested now and then that the Blacks Arts Festival, as some still identify us, should move downtown or to Ojibway Island. For the near future, however, we are sticking with heritage and tradition of sticking with our neighborhood base at Morley. We love our location. Morley School Park is our landmark.

Ralph Martin is president of the Saginaw African Cultural Festival Committee. He is a retired Saginaw Fire Department lieutenant who is closing his career as a state fire marshal, and also a longtime leader of the Saginaw Library Commission.

Anyone who has encountered a public speech by Saleem Mannan is unlikely to forget the experience.

Many in Saginaw have seen Saleem express to the City Council in opposition to permits for marijuana dispensaries, or most recently in favor of the Houghton-Jones Neighborhood Association. This makes him an ideal presenter for a gathering to discuss one of the 19th century’s great orators.

Abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke in Saginaw in 1868 and again in 1885, and Mannan will review the second appearance in a “Lunch and Learn” session at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the downtown Castle Museum of Saginaw County History.

“His first visit was only three years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and his main topic at that time was to expand voting rights,” Mannan explains, “In 1885, his Saginaw speech marked the 50th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade.”

Participants at the free event will witness how this local dynamo on current events, as a board member for both Great Lakes Bay Health Care and for Houghton-Jones, traces deep roots. After all, Douglass devoted his main efforts to preparing for the stage, far more than speaking from the stage. Saleem’s story is similar.

Castle Museum Lunch & Learn featuring Saleem Mannan

The former Anthony Albert moved to Saginaw in 1970 and began a 42-year career at the GM Grey Iron Plant. In time he enrolled at St. Joseph’s Adult High School, near the shadow of the foundry.

The principal was Sister Ardeth Platte, an advocate for the poor. She encouraged his civic involvement and he was elected Student Council president, which led to his encounters with activists such as Lou Oates and Omowale Art Smith, Charles McNair and Bobby Stitt. He recalls vigorous debates on philosophy and on strategy, as his new awareness did not diminish his independent thought.

His faith conversion led him to the Islamic Temple on Fourth Street, where today he chairs the Board of Trustees. The familiar structure, across from the old Germania School/OIC, now is connected with the Islamic Center of Saginaw, located on North Center Road out past Heritage High School.

He met his bride, Mennana, on one of his first pilgrimages to Morocco, and today they share eight children and 14 grandchildren.

So where did Saginaw’s newest Muslim get started in his social volunteerism? This began not in the inner-city, as we might imagine, but also in Coleman, north of Midland, in partnership with farmers to create an organic food co-op.

“They were Quakers, the kindest people you ever will meet,” he recalls, and he remains a relentless advocate of a healthy diet and nutrition.

Next came a successful effort to save the life of Carl Bass, who was on death row when he escaped from an Alabama prison and fled north to Saginaw.

Mannan went international when he tackled apartheid in South Africa, supporting Oates and Sister Ardeth when they pushed 1980s City Council members for a local disinvestment ordinance, part of a national movement that helped to create Nelson Mandela’s historic 1991 transition from prisoner to president of the former British colony.

“My feeling was that as bad as we (black citizens in the U.S.A.) had it, our conditions were nowhere near as bad in South Africa,” he said.

In Arabic, his first name represents “peaceful” and his last name “generous” and “benefactor.” These are qualities that Saleem Mannan brings to any endeavor, even when he is in his Frederick Douglass mode.

Rapper Lecrae, known for lyrics that reflect his Christian faith, will be hitting the road with the ‘Church Clothes’ tour, paying homage to his mixtape series which spanned nearly a decade.  The Grammy Award-winner took to Instagram on Monday (January 16) to announce the 25-date tour, which will stop in Saginaw on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00 pm at the Dow Event Center.

The Final ‘Church Clothes’ Tour

Before the Grammys, before releasing the #1 Album in the country (Anomaly, 2014), Lecrae dropped arguably the most seminal project in his catalog, Church Clothes. XXL said, “It’s impressive how he’s able to deliver a message without being preachy”, calling Church Clothes “a prime example of the reach of hip-hop music and culture.” The people spoke even louder downloading the project 100,000 times in 48 hours. People rocked with the mixtape because it was the first time someone planted their feet simultaneously in the streets and the Church without compromising.

10 years and two more entries later (CC2, and CC3), it becomes crystal clear that while Lecrae didn’t start Christian Hip-Hop (CHH), it’s his lane. In the 10 years since Church Clothes originally dropped no one has been able to keep a consistent focus on sincere Christianity and authentic Hip-Hop representation while enjoying the heights and enduring the lows like Crae.

On Church Clothes 4, the mission remains the same for rapper, CEO, New York Times Best-Selling author, investor, and activist: To represent faith and Hip-Hop with an Unashamed edge that challenges the Church to live up to its potential and encourages the Culture to reconcile with its Savior. In this entry, Lecrae gives his listeners an opportunity to see what it looks like to reconstruct a vision of faith despite the large-scale shift toward mistrust and disillusionment with Christianity in the wake of America’s racial tensions.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com or in person only at The Dow Event Center Box Office. The Dow Event Center Box Office is currently open on Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  General Admission starts at $32.00.
